Kyoto had some of the best traditional snacks, and they make great souvenirs. We mostly just had yatsuhashi. We brought back a bunch as souvenirs but I’m tempted to eat them all for myself. At once stand that we were stocking up at I took a picture with an Otabe-chan statue. She’s the symbolic figurehead [...] One of the best experiences we had on our Japan trip was staying at traditional Japanese style hostels and hotels. They were all a no-shoe zone (you have to leave your shoes in the foyer or hallway), the floors were covered in tatami mats, the beds were Japanese futons (so comfy!) and the seating area [...] One of the best places in Kyoto to see traditional Japanese architecture and a beautiful garden is at Nijo castle. If I remember correctly the fee is ¥600 per person. The grounds are kept well with mostly gravel paths everywhere and you can roam around freely, unlike the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. For one, we didn’t have to dirty the sleepwear we brought (less laundry) and they are really comfortable.
