I thought this was amusing. Two British guys (Adam and Joe, obviously) are in Tokyp, Japan telling us all the things about the Japanese. It’s obviously ridiculously bias and essentializing, but it’s all in the name of entertainment. Hence, take it with a grain of salt. And on to the videos!

Korean Myths

As I was procrastinating by reading this blog, I found myself enjoying a particular post called Korean Myth Buster. I found it entertaining enough to repost it here.

Fan Death
Yes, you read that right. In Korea people believe that fans are capable of killing people during the night in three ways: hypothermia, suffocation or poisoning. Apparently fans can suck the air from your face creating a vacuum which can suffucate you while you’re sleeping. Hypothermia supposedly occurs because of the fan dramatically lowering your body temperature if it’s blowing directly on you. Carbon Dioxide poisoning occurs because of the fan displacing the oxygen in the room.

I still can’t believe people think this is true. Fans come especially equipped with timers so that you don’t accidently off yourself while you slumber.

Stuff From Korea

My cousin (who is teaching English in South Korea) came back last week for a visit and she brought me some nifty trinkets. First off, she got me a portable kid’s chopstick and spoon set. It’s so cute! And because the chopsticks are made for kids, they are shorter and easier to use =D. Don’t ask me why there is a syringe on the case…I’ve noticed that Korean things tend to be random.

Secondly she got me a pen (actually, I think she gave this to my sister, but shh!) and a couple’s cellphone charm set. I got the boy and he got the girl. When I was looking at the pen though, I noticed the same figure of the man from my cellphone charm on the pen. Hmm…she either got it at the same store, which has a bunch of men with hearts cut out of their chest, or it is a popular item in Korea. Has anyone else seen this before?

So are you a weiguk* in S. Korea, or are planning to go to S. Korea, and don’t know what cultural landmarks to hit up? Well here is Brian Joo to the rescue. This is a two part series where Brian and his weiguk* neighbour talk about things you can do in Korea. The acting makes me laugh (not necessarily because they suck at acting, but the dialogue is so awkward), but it is pretty uselful. I only posted the first episode. The second one is easy to find when you click the “Direct Link” I posted, since it’s usually in the “related videos” table. Check it out.
