Argh!
mood:
listening to: Gackt - Arittake no Ai de
It's about halfway through the term now, and it's getting to that point where I really miss going to school. Only another 8 weeks to go!
But anyway, now it's my time to rant! [evil]hehehe[/evil]
There have been a few things I find pretty annoying since coming to NYC. I just hate the stupid drivers that think they have to honk at every freaking chance they get. When I walk from my house to the subway station, and then to work, I swear I would hear at least 4-5 honks... and then there is coming back from work. -_-;
My roomates have been overall pretty good. I don't really associate myself with them. I did make some small talk with one of them now and then, but nothing we really share in common... I'm still in college, and they're in their 30s. One annoying thing is that one of my roomates would stay up late watching TV. And it's not so much that the TV is loud, but he would laugh and make comments to himself in Chinese. And there's always this really weird thing he cooks... I'm afraid to ask him what it is, or rather that I don't really want to. It seriously smells like rotten meat. I've cooked pork that's about two days expired (just to see if it's ok), and what he cooks smells just like that, except much stronger. The stench seriously stays in the house until morning when I wake up. It's disgusting! And is it only me that notices how awful the smell is? Probably, because...
They also have the habit of putting food in the fridge on plates, without seran wraps. So the fridge smells pretty nasty, and I always make sure all my food are sealed tightly and put in plastic bags so they don't absorb any of the odours. First of all, the smell is nasty, and second it's not very sanitary to just have food lying there without being wrapped. Same thing with the freezer. I tried putting in baking soda, which didn't really help.
Then there are some of the people at work... not the people I work with, but around. They say a lot of stupid things, like, "Well today I was talking to [some girl at work] and I just noticed she had eyes. Hahaha." If you don't know what that means then it's ok... but yeah, just annoying.
I think before we came to the US the co-op co-ordinator said that a lot of people will go through a period where they're very excited about being in a new place, and then they'll crash (missing their home, etc.), but then they'll level out. I feel that I'm in the crashed state, and hopefully I'll level out soon.
One thing is for certain though, I'm definitely looking forward to going back home.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm not regretting coming to NYC. I got to see Eric and his family, and meet a lot of people here. I'm also doig some Wing Chun, which is fun. The thing is that I have to limit myself to what I can or cannot do. Lehman isn't paying co-ops nearly enough based on what other co-ops are earning in NYC. The housing is way overpriced here, and so is mostly everything else.. hopefully I'll make it out with enough for tuition.

Got Sick
mood:
listening to: Kodo Kumi - 1000 no Kotoba
I think I might have caught the flu over the weekend. It was a fun weekend though.
My dad, Grace, Joyce and Ams came to NYC for the weekend. My dad was mostly at my aunt's place, since going around NYC doesn't interest him that much.
They arrived here on Saturday morning, and I took my sisters and Ams to SoHo, where we planned to meet with Eric and his friend Kelvin. I had planned to eat lunch at a place in SoHo, but when we got there we found out the place isn't very big. So we ended up walking over to Chinatown to meet up with some more of Eric's friends, and we ate at a Chinese place. That place was cheap! You get a good-sized portion for under $5.
Later we went to a mall in Queens, to dodge the stupid cold weather. After that we all headed over to my aunt and uncle's apartment.
On Sunday I was feeling a bit weird, but wasn't really that sick yet.... later that, however, I started to get more sick. We went to Redeemer's Church, and the service was good. I probably only heard half of the sermon cuz I was sick/tired, but from what I did hear (and what Ams said), it was good.
They left Monday morning, and I spent the whole day resting up.
I missed work today cuz I felt sick, and thought it's best to stay home and get some rest. I went into work yesterday, and it was not the best thing to do. I ended up leaving work earlier cuz I didn't feel too well.
PS. Ams has been in the new house that my family is in now... and I still haven't been there yet. O_O

Blizzard!
mood:
listening to: nothing
...Not the company that made Warcraft. There was a huge blizzard this morning, and the result was snow up to my knees. I missed church this morning. When I stepped out, the wind was blowing like crazy, and I hadn't seen so much snow since my work term in Ottawa.
I guess this ends the streak of having no snow in NYC. =( Why, oh why did the snow have to come here?

Courses for next term
mood:
listening to: Utada Hikaru - Eternally
I'm pretty torn about what courses to take next term. I need 3 more non-math electives to finish up my B.Math, but the only courses I want to take ARE math courses.
I need to take Stat 333 (Applied Probability) and CS 437 (Computer Simulation of Complex Systems) as part of my Stats minor, so those are no-brainer for next term. I'm gonna take a D.E. course during my next work term that is non-math, which means I need one non-math course per term for my last two terms...
But the problem is I want to take all these CS courses. The ones I have in mind right now are Algorithms 2, Database, Networking, Distributed Systems, and A.I.. But I can only choose two/three of those to take! The reason is because I'm doing a Stats minor, which means I still need to take at least one more Stats course. I am thinking Stat 454 (Sampling Theory and Practice) because I really like the first course on that... but I might also take Stat 440 (Computational Inference) since that one counts as both CS and Stats course, and it sounds really interesting. So that leaves me to only two more CS courses during 4B -- one being Concurrency since I still need to do that course, and it's only offered during the winter... so I can only pick one more CS course to take.
Right now I'm thinking I should just take whatever is the easiest, as my last two terms are looking to be very hard. Algo 2 might be really hard, so that might be out. I'm actually not that interested in DB, but it could be useful for my career, so I might take that. Networking is something I really wanna take... which means Dist. Sys. and A.I. are probably out.... but I really want to take A.I.. Maybe I should just drop DB in favour of the less useful A.I.?
As for my non-math courses (dammit), I'm thinking of taking Phil 359, which is Philosophy of Mathematics... I guess it's the only non-math course I wouldn't mind taking. *sigh* What a waste of a course slot... lol. Actually, maybe I should take MTHEL 102 (Uses and Abuses of Statistics), but I'm afraid it might be too easy for me since I've taken four upper-level stats courses already. O_o
Well, I will try and work out something.

Tax Free Shopping!
mood:
listening to: Vivaldi - Four Seasons 4 (Winter)
My dad and Grace came to NYC this weekend. I spent the whole day out in Manhattan with Grace yesterday. We saw the Pixar exhibition at MoMA, got some starbucks, and saw the WTC. I took grace to the mall (in Queens), and we did some shopping. It's tax-free this weekend! Soooo sweet. Too bad we never get any tax-free weekends in Ontario >_>.
I bought the trilogy set of LoTR extended version, and Corpse Bride... yes, I need things to watch to keep me from getting bored. Grace bought a lot of things from Bath and Body, and I got some ties from Macy's.
One thing I sure will miss once I leave NYC is the convenience of having everything you need within 1-2 blocks, and being to go pretty much everywhere you need using the subway... the MTA is waaay better than the TTC.
