I read this article written by Amy Verner on The Globe and Mail. It basically talks about how men should not have stylish hair in the office or they lose credibility. While I agree that there is discrimination against men that like to do more with their hair, I don’t think we should encourage such discrimination nor conform to it.
Men should make a little effort with their hair, but too much effort can compromise their credibility. High-maintenance males are likely more concerned with mirrors than mutual funds.
How does putting effort into their hair make someone lose credibility? Would the author say the same thing about women? High-maintenance females are likely more concerned with mirrors than mutual funds? Forget hiring and promoting people based on their merits, just look at their hairdo!
The rest of the article goes on about how men shouldn’t put too much gel, or get highlights, or dye their hair. Because you know, if you do anything too “crazy” with your hair then you can’t climb the corporate ladder. If I have to pick between looking good and climbing the corporate ladder, I’d choose looking good. We don’t need more people trying to get us to conform to some standard way of looking in the office. What’s next? There are already enough people that look pretty much the same, diversity is good!
