Study Finds 38% of Gamers are Females

March 3rd, 2008

A study recently done by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) claims that 38% of American gamers are female. I could no find any links to the actual study, and a Google search returned nothing. The closest I got was a Game Player Data page on the ESA website.

I don’t find anything wrong with the study itself, but the response from people who see the results are a bit moronic sometimes. Just look at the headline for the Kotaku link I have above: Stuff We Already Know About Female Gamers: Now In A Study! Why do people keep saying that women gamers are more casual compared to their male counterparts? Guess what, there are a lot of casual male gamers too! It’s like saying hardcore female gamers are an anomaly, while casual male gamers aren’t that strange at all.

There is a lot more behind the statistics than just numbers. The results of this study definitely should not be interpreted as female gamers mostly play casual games because they are female.

Nintendo E3 press conference today!

July 11th, 2007

Nintendo’s press conference at E3 is today at 9:00 AM PST. You can see it live at e3.1up.com. I don’t have sounds here at work, so I’ll have to read up on the 1up blogs and stuff to keep informed. I’m pretty psyched. Hope they have good things to show at E3. Knowing Nintendo, they will have some pretty impressive showing.

Homemade burgers!

July 10th, 2007

My blogging frequency has been pretty low for the last little while. I’ll try to change that, but it’s hard to get into the mood to blog nowadays, with work and all.

This past weekend I was over at Ams’ place. We had BBQ for dinner on Saturday, and we made our own burgers! It turned out quite well. It’s always more satisfying to make your own food. And even more satisfying when it turns out well. =P

This week so far has been pretty blah. The weather has been just horrible! Very very hot and humid. Oh, will it just rain already!

On further news, I bought Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. Only played about an hour today, and it’s pretty scary stuff. And I haven’t even encountered any zombies yet! Gah!! Those stupid farmers have some high resillience to bullets. Three shots to the head with a shotgun and they are still running at me with an axe. What the heck! >.>

Wii Not Just a Fad

May 29th, 2007

It astounds me that even now there are analysts who doubt the Wii’s success. Before its launch last November, I remember reading articles talking about how the Wii would be nothing more than a fad and in the long run the PS3 will be top with Xbox 360 coming in second in the then-next-gen console race. It’s close to June, 2007 right now and you still can’t walk into a store and buy a Wii off the shelves — not unless you are extremely lucky. It seems the “experts” were wrong, and the general public is liking the Wii very much. Thank God! Having nice graphics and is great and all, but I’d rather play a great game with mediocre graphics than a mediocre game with great graphics. Sony and Microsoft invested heavily in “nice graphics” and the whole media center idea. Nintendo went the odd route and focused on *gasp* making fun games. If anyone doubted the Nintendo Wii it’s time to start believing.

Of course there are always those younger generation types who think Sony is and will always be the best. They think Xbox 360 and PS3 is for the “hardcore” gamers, whereas the Wii is for those casual types. But really, what is a hardcore gamer? People need to stop being elitists and admit that there isn’t much of a difference between being a hardcore gamer and a casual gamer. I’m a hardcore gamer, but I’m also a casual gamer at times. The only difference between the two is that one labels you as someone who plays a lot of video games, and the other as someone who plays every now and then. Sure, I can gloat about my “l337″ skills in [insert game title]. But really, I would much rather play games with friends that are intuitive to play and wouldn’t give me much edge over them just because I’m more used to the controls. Maybe that’s the reason why these hardcore gamers are so offended by Wii games. Now when they face off against a gaming novice at Wii Tennis, for example, they no longer have the advantage of being hardcore.

I think the Wii is here to stay. Don’t fuss over the graphics too much because I don’t think it’s a big issue. World of Warcraft has pretty outdated graphics (understandably), but it’s still the most successful MMO game ever created! In the end there might be a few people that will complain about not having the best graphics possible, but most gamers play games because they are fun. As long as the Wii doesn’t stop being fun, people will play it.

Holy Spam Batman!

March 8th, 2007

I haven’t blogged for a while, nor have I managed my comments. I logged in today only to find more than 500 comments awaiting moderation (spam filter caught them), so I wasted no time in deleting them all with a press of a button. Then I go to view the comments that did go through, and had to manually delete 100 or so comments that the spam filter did not catch. It sure was a pain, and now I think I should install another spam filter, maybe one with Bayesian inferencing.

So school has been pretty busy. (more…)

Real Life Pacman

December 28th, 2006

I stumbled upon this video through StumbleUpon’s new video feature. Pretty funny, wish I was there to see it.

Virtual Stalker

December 4th, 2006

I recently started playing one of my alts (alternate characters) on WoW, and yesterday I kept getting whispers from a guy that asks me if he could help me. My alt is a female Night Elf rogue, so maybe the guy thought I was a real female or something. Anyway, I told him I don’t need help but he invited me to group anyway. I didn’t want to be mean so I accepted. I was almost done my quest anyway. So after about 5 mins or so I was done and I left the group and logged.

Today when I played my rogue, the same guy whispers me again asking if he can help me. I told him no, but he kept insisting. So of course I put him on my ignore list. Later I see him flying towards where I was. I was about to log out anyway, so I did. Seriously, what a loser. =P

I came across this video on Google Video. I’m not sure how it was done, but it had me laughing.

Tales of Symphonia OVA

October 30th, 2006

An OVA for the hit RPG Tales of Symphonia, on the Gamecube, has been announced for a 2007 release date. You can follow this link to see the announcement on a Japanese website. I don’t read Japanese, but I can get a rough translation of it using Google.  This is very exciting, and I cannot wait to see the OVA. I’ve played the game with my sister Joyce, and it is awesome-ness to the MAX!!! :P

Current Mood: happy excited.
