Navigate Google search results via keyboard shortcuts

November 29th, 2007

I was browser around on lifehack today and found this entry for Google Experimental’s keyboard shortcuts. Of particular interest if the comment left Davosian that gives a way of adding the keyboard shortcut to your Firefox search bar.

From the post:

I added a new search engine to Firefox’s top right search field by adding the following xml file to

C:\Documents and Settings\[YOURUSERNAME]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[YOURPROFILENAME]\searchplugins:

—– googleext.xml start ————
<SearchPlugin xmlns=”http://www.mozilla.org/2006/browser/search/”>

You have to restart Firefox for this search engine (called Google Exp) to show up in the dropdown list.

Heroes: Victoria Pratt

November 28th, 2007

Just thought I’d say that the actress (Jaime Ray Newman) that played Victoria Pratt in 1977 on this week’s Heroes episode is hot! Why can’t they get her to be a regular on the show? :P

Photosynth

November 27th, 2007

I just saw a really cool demo of a product called Photosynth. It’s a new way to link and present digital images on a computer. There is also a demo on the Live website, so you can check it out yourself.

Heroes 2×10 - Truth & Consequences

November 26th, 2007

Now, that was a good Heroes episode. Sylar is back with the rest of the season one cast! I feel Sylar hasn’t really fit into this season at all. It’s almost as if his role this season is irrelevant to the main plot. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong with next week’s season finale.

There are a few things I didn’t really get. Adam Monroe (aka Takezo Kensei) told Peter Petrelli earlier that if he (Adam) could be killed, then The Company would have done that. However, this episode he claims that getting shot in the head is something that he (nor Peter) can recover from. Maybe The Company didn’t kill him, not because he couldn’t be killed, but because Adam is a valuable research subject. And Adam lied to Peter in order to get him to go along with him.

Actually, didn’t Peter die in the future, due to the Shanti virus? At least that’s what we were told when Peter travelled into the future. But I thought that he had the same healing power as Claire and Adam? Perhaps the virus is so powerful that even he couldn’t heal from? Or maybe Claire’s (and hence Peter’s) healing power isn’t as potent as Adam’s.

I’m pretty psyched about next week’s episode, Powerless. A battle ensues pitting the Petrelli brothers against Hiro and Matt Parkman. What I’d like to know is why Nathan and Peter would all of the sudden willingly fight against Hiro and Matt. Why would Peter trust Adam over Hiro? I guess we’ll find out next week how everything unfolds.

Beating Captchas

November 23rd, 2007

I was just reading an article on Coding Horror on captchas. It talked about sites using bad captchas (like ticketmaster), so that even humans cannot read them. Oh, if you don’t know, captchas are those little images that contain distorted text in which users must fill out before submit a form. You’ll see them on a lot of blogging sites so prevent bots from spamming the comments. Google also uses it for Gmail to prevent bots from signing up spam accounts.

Anyway, back to the topic, I was thinking whether I can develop some sort of algorithm to beat even the most advanced captchas currently deployed on the web. I mean, if humans can read them, then there has to be a way to do image analysis to recognize text, right? Maybe I should try making such a program, and then selling it on the underground markets in Russia. I’m just joking — about the selling part.

“You should be a mathematician”

November 19th, 2007

I just remembered this phone conversation I overheard while on the greyhound, on my way back from Waterloo this past weekend. This girl was on the phone with her friend, and asked what the result was for the multiplication of two (somewhat) large numbers. I can’t recall what the numbers where, but I think one was three digits and the other was two digits. Her friend, I assume, gave some answer — whether right or wrong, I don’t know — which then the girls promptly exclaimed, “Wow, how did you know that? You should be a mathematician!”

Say, what? Mathema… what? Since when does simple multiplication qualifies someone as a mathematician. Maybe the ability to do multiplications in your head quickly might impress a few people here and there, but that’s not real math. Don’t equate the beauty of mathematics, which require human creativity and intelligence, with something I can program a robot to do. Oh, the blaspheme!

4 Year Anniversary!

November 17th, 2007

It was Ams and mine 4 year anniversary on Thursday (Nov. 15th). I took Friday off so I could go to Waterloo and visit her. We were looking at some old photos of us, and oh man I can’t believe we used to look like that. I’d say that we look much improved since our first date four years ago. What did she see in me at the time? heh :P

My Ankle is Borked

November 13th, 2007

I think my left ankle is worse than before. I’ve had a weak ankle since spraining it in highschool while playing basketball. But ever since I sprained it this past summer while playing ball with some co-workers, it hasn’t really healed completely. It’s fine sometimes, but sometimes it just feels really weird. If I wear a tensor then it’s fine, but I shouldn’t rely on that. Maybe I should go see a doctor about it, or a physiotherapist?

A Lot To Do

November 13th, 2007

I’ve been very busy at work for the last little while. There are a lot of projects here and there that I’m working on. High on my current priority list is a mobile version of the GlobeInvestor website that will be launching along with a mobile version of the Globe & Mail website. The day goes by so fast when you have a ton of crap to do at work. I can’t believe it’s November already, with Christmas just over the horizon! Everyday is so routine, and I’m starting to get bored of it… not the work, but just that everyday is more of less the same thing. I guess no matter what your work is, eventually it’s just gonna become routine, which kinda sucks.

If I wasn’t saving up money I’d definitely take a long weekend, or even take a week off, to go somewhere and have fun. But alas, I don’t have that much money to spend on vacations. I just hope that I do get to go to Japan and Korea next year, I really need a break.

Why I Won’t Wear a Poppy

November 10th, 2007

Remembrance Day is tomorrow in Canada. These days you see many people walking around with a red poppy pinned to their jackets. We are urged to remember what the veterans did for us during the war. It’s ironic then that Remembrance Day almost completely ignores the many Chinese Canadian soldiers did for Canada during the war. Everywhere you see images of white soldiers, but where are the native Canadians, the black Canadians, the Chinese Canadians? Even at the Canadian War Museum that recently opened in Ottawa, you see no hints that any Chinese Canadians participated in the war effort.

red poppyIf you dig hard enough you can find some info on the Chinese Canadian soldiers, but most people do not even know that they existed. On the Veteran Affairs Canada website, they do have a section dedicated to those forgotten soliders. Running some Google searches yield a few pieces of info here and there. But they all seem to be unanimous that the period of racism has passed, and the Chinese Canadians, in turn for their heroic service during the war, now enjoy the same privileges as other Canadians.

It’s quite sad that Canada has chosen not to acknowledge the histories of these brave men and women, who fought for the country they loved. Even now, it’s the Chinese Canadians that have to make sure that their history and heritage is not forgotten forever. There is a Chinese Canadian Military Museum in Vancouver that is dedicated to “educating the public of the Chinese fight to repeal discriminatory laws and to earn their citizenship with all the rights and privileges and stand equal with other Canadians.”

The reason why I won’t wear a poppy is because I want to remember. I remember that it wasn’t just the white people who fought for Canada. I remember the ordeals that the Japanese Canadians had to go through. I remember all the excuses given by the Canadian government to justify racism during the war. When I look at images of our war heroes — like the statue erected across from Wilfrid Laurier University, at the Veteran’s Green — I can’t help but feel a bit repulsed by all the racism and ignorance that comes with Remembrance Day.

lest we forget
