NBA referee in gambling scandal

July 26th, 2007

A huge scandal has surfaced in the NBA. It has been revealed that one of the the referees has been betting on games that he officiated. Tim Donaghy, a 13 year referee in the NBA has allegedly been betting on NBA games, including ones he officiated, and also accused of passing information to others.

This brings to question the integrity of the NBA games. Just think about game 6 of the Raptors-Nets series and game 3 of the Suns-Spurs series, both of which Donaghy refereed. David Stern and the rest of the league will try hard to control the damage, but you really have to wonder why the league did not catch Donaghy in the act, and had to wait for the FBI to conduct an investigation. Apparently the league knew of the referee’s gambling problems, so you’d think they would keep a closer watch. And who’s to say this is an isolated incident? Of course Stern says is it, but that’s what you would expect him to say.
