I just had a property manager come by my place to show the apartment to potential tenants. She is the same bitchy lady that processed out paperwork for when we moved in. I had the chain lock on my door and the first thing she told me when I opened the door was that I couldn’t have the chain lock on in case there is a fire. WTF. The chain lock was there when I moved in. Hence, it was already installed (probably by the landlords) and yet it is my fault for using it? WTF! She’s really bitchy about everything. She didn’t even give me my 24 hour warning before she came and didn’t even apologize for barging in on me. Her attitude demeans others and she acts so high and mighty. I wrote an official complaint to the property managering office. I hope they fire her.

Living Alone

Author: Ams
08 4th, 2008

I think I mentioned previously that I’ve moved back to Waterloo until the end of August to work on my research. Well here I am living in my three-bedroom student apartment all alone. Ok that’s a lie - my hamster is with me too…and two house plants. But I’m pretty much alone since Tokki sleeps for the majority of my awake time and the plants are just plants. Jack came up this weekend and we hung out for a few days (long weekend) but other than that the place has been empty.

For the time I have been alone it has been weird getting into a pattern of living alone. Having people live with you definitely shapes your habits. For instance, when my two stupid roommates lived here with me I would try avoid going outside my room when I knew they were out there. Why? Because if I wasn’t asked really stupid questions I would get sucked into a socially awkward, brainless and/or ridiculously boring conversation. And then there is also the issues with rotting food. Personally, I like to avoid that.

Now that I’m here alone I’ve been wondering how to conduct myself. For instance, is it still inappropriate to not close the door when you’re on the can? Nobody is there so is it a big deal? Should I let my dishes pile up until I feel like washing them since I won’t be inconveniencing anyone? Can I take up all the room in the fridge without seeming like a hog? I know some of the answers might seem straight forward but since I’ve always had to share my space with other people, I have never had to question when such social norms are null. Null or nullified? Anyway, it’s weird. I took a piss with the door open…it felt so wrong.

Halloween Outing

11 1st, 2007

I went out for Halloween last night with the other grad students. It was pretty fun. Side note: I saw many “ethnic” costumes…I was tempted to say “I’m dressed as a White person. I’m sure people wouldn’t get my point. Anyway, we predrank and then went to the Grad Pub on campus and then to Wilfs (because it was raining). My tolderance for alcohol has definately increased. Before I was super buzzed after one drink, and now I drink 2 or 3 without the giddy shits at the end of the night. I think I was the most sober one, and I had my first experience watching a drunk friend and making sure they got home safely. It’s an experience that has really put me in my place. Can’t really explain my revelation without going into a lot of backstory…but just know that I feel a lot better about things now.

In other news, I e-mailed my property manager to have my blinds looked at because they’re busted. Technically they work, but it takes forever to pull them down because it keeps locking. So I usually have to stand there for a good 3 minutes tugging at the string while the blinds slowly move down millimeter by millimeter. UGH! I e-mailed him two weeks ago and he keeps saying that he’ll send someone over but nothing has happened. And for my previous roomies reading, my window doesn’t close fully and I get a slight draft. WTF! Why do I always have window problems? >_>

[edit] My property manager just came by to look at the blinds and he’s going to get me a new set. W00t. He measured the length of them with his arm span…should I be concerned? [/edit]

New Roommates

10 21st, 2007

I have two new roommates this year. They annoy the crap out of me. When I talk to them face-to-face they are quite polite and friendly, but their habits make me want to hurt them. Now I’ve tried not being so anal, and I’ve tried to understand that there will be cultural differences between us, but some things are just expected. I should not have to be their live-in mother away from home. I should not have to remind them to change the toilet paper, to fill up the brita jug, to wash and/or put away their dishes, or to repace cummunal items that they dispose of. Isn’t it just decent to do these things without being asked? Do you want me to slap you up the head and tell you to learn some manners?

Another thing: isn’t it also decent to NOT lock your roommate out with the chainlock when she gets home after you go to bed? What the fuck?! How is it hard to understand that if my house slippers are at the door, that means I’m still out? COMMON SENSE, dumbass.

I talked to them about it. They smiled and said they would change. An hour after our meeting I walked out to find that one of the requests I made (and had gotten approval of adhereing to) had been ignored. Why say you will change if you’re not going to? I don’t want to have yet another meeting to tell them my frustrations. I will go about my business (even if that includes throwing their dishes out) and let them deal with it. Pretty-smiley-face is not smiling anymore.
