Beerfest 2008

Jack and I just bought our tickets to Beerfest 2008. It’s an annual beer festival that is held in Toronto that celebrates beer in Canada. There are more than 200 beers featured and some other junk like prizes and stuff. It runs from Friday August 7 to Sunday August 10. We’re going for the Saturday one. I’m really looking forward to it. Since Jack and I haven’t done much during undergrad, it’s nice to go to festivals and stuff together and with our friends. For those who are interested in going, get your tickets early by buying them online. =)

Hello 2008!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that 2008 will bring you joy and happiness, but most importantly, gratitude. No matter what our position is in life we always should thank God for the blessings we have. 2007 was a bitter-sweet year for me. There were a lot of hard moments, such as deaths close to me, having to say goodbye to my close friend Maki, and having to return to school for another year with different living conditions. But there were also many happy moments, like my engagement with Jack.

Speaking of our engagement, we had our engagement party this past Friday. It was a lot of fun and we had a good turnout. We had a lot more food than we were expecting so we had to eat a lot the following couple of days. For the most part it ran pretty smoothyl up until the end. The security guards didn’t tell us that we had to be out of the room by 10:45 so we were frantically trying to pack up everything and get out so they cound finish the inspection. My feet were killing me by the end of the night too. Other than those two things, I had a great time.

Well that’s all from me. Hopefully I will be able to blog more often in the next month. I shouldn’t be TOO busy. =P

Today we set back the clock an hour for Daylight Saving Time. Btw, it is Saving not Savings! So we got an extra hour to our day. And what do most people do with their extra hour? Well sleep of course =P. Jack came up this weekend to visit and I got to spend my annual extra hour with him. Is there anyone else I would rather spend it with? Cuddling with my honey makes me happy. ^_^

Btw, Jack and I moved my desk around my room and now it looks so much bigger! I’m very satisfied with it. And now I can look out the window into the sky and my bare but beautiful maple tree. *happy sigh* Oh, and in the process of moving the desk a shelf from the side part of the desk slipped out and landed on my toe. It hurt pretty badly. I’m hoping that it doesn’t bruise…I heard those are painful. I can’t really tell what effect it’s had (other than a huge dent on my toenail) because I have nailpolish on. Thank God for toenails. If that had hit on the flesh…ooh, I don’t want to think about it. >_<

I found a place to live for next year in Waterloo. Hooray! Jack and I went up to Waterloo this past Sunday and then saw some places with my roommate on Sunday. We say five places in total and three of them were gross. I don’t know how people can live in such filthy conditions. Another place wasn’t that bad, but it was quite a walk from campus and since I may be on campus late now and then, I’d rather not have a 20-30 minute walk home. The place my roommate and I decided on is REALLY close to campus, includes utilities in the rent, is being fully renovated for when we move in, and comes with furniture. Can I say SWEEEEET DEAL. I’m really excited about the place. I got the biggest room too. Tokki will have fun running around it. =D

So that is one thing off my to-do list. It was also the first time I met my roommate. She seems nice, and I hope she won’t turn out to be hard to live with like someone else in my life. I was a little disappointed this weekend though because it was also supposed to function as Ams and Jack alone time, and one of my current roommates showed up for the weekend to pack. It didn’t really matter since Jack and I went out for the most part, but there is alwas that awkwardness about having someone else there when you want quality time. Anyway, it wasn’t a big deal. Just a bummer.

Actually, I was freaked out when she showed up because 1) I wasn’t expecting her, and 2) she came when we were taking a nap. So I was asleep and I hear all this noise outside my door. So I open it to see who it is, and it’s my roommate and her boyfriend. She was looking at me like this O_O and then asked me if I had been there the entire time. I was still half awake so I didn’t know what exactly she was asking me. And then she asked when I got in. I eventually found out that the interregation was due to her forgetting her keys when she came up and she had to stay in a hotel last night until her boyfriend dropped off her keys in the morning. That’s a real bummer. So it could have been worse for us…we could have come Friday night to hear her trying to break into the house. =P

I’m currently stranded at Jack’s place because of the stupid wind. For the past three days I have gotten about 8 hours of sleep here and there, so I was dead tired this morning. I was up all night (minus a one hour nap at 2am) because I was working on a take-home exam. After handing it in this afternoon I head over to Jack’s place to sleep. It would have probably been the last time I saw him for a couple of weeks since we have crazy schedules for the week and a half. So being passed out in the same room with him while he studies is better than nothing. Well…i slept for a few hours just to wake up and realize that I would be stranded at his place. The wind is REALLY BAD. We went to pick up a pizza from across the street and I not only almost got blown away, but I also tried running against the wind and I didn’t make any progress! I was running on the spot with almost all my force. CRAZY! So yeah…I’m stuck here for the night and I didn’t bring anything to do. So my only source for entertainment is the internet! I guess it could be worse. I could be stuck reading. XD

So I’ve been reading a really awesome site called Racialicious. It posts articles and entries about “race” and racial issues in contemporary society, especially the media. I love reading it. Some other articles that I would recommend reading are:

  1. Racial slur on sofa label stuns family: This happened in my home town. At least now I know where I should avoid buying furniture. I can’t believe that people can tolerate such blatant racism by claiming that it’s not their responsibility to take blame for racial slurs on packaging.
  2. Woman, 30, posed as teenage boy in sex case: I found it really interesting how the media presented this story. I wonder if anyone else picked up on the fact that the parents charged the woman with abusing their daughter AFTER they found out that Mark was actually Lorelei. Seems to me this is more about saving face than it is about justice. Also, there wasn’t any mention of whether Mark was actually a transsexual and not merely just a con artist. The idea that those who cross dress and bend gender norms are somehow a threat to public safety really disturbs me. It’s not that I advocate fraud, but it I feel we take for granted the ways in which people are demonized.
