Think Before You Speak Advertisement
I was so happy to see this on TV.
I really don’t care what Hilary Duff’s intentions were on making this ad (whether she genuinely cares or if she just got paid to do it) but I’m so glad that there is finally something in mainstream media targeting youth to question homophobic language. It really bothers me when I hear people saying statements like “that’s so gay” or “that’s so lame” - as if “abnormal” sexuality and “disability” (differently abled) should be used as a synonym for stupid. It is offensive and a blatant way of Othering people by ridiculing difference. I really hope this ad will make a difference by getting people to start thinking about the words they use so that our society can become less ignorant and hateful.

OH. MY. GOSH.
I want EVERY SINGLE STUDENT aged 6-24 to WATCH this and LISTEN TO IT. I would be DELIGHTED if I didn’t have to tell them myself that their words are utterly offensive AND ignorant. Same with “That’s retarded!” ARRGHH!!!

LOVE. Like you said, I don’t care why she did it, the fact that something like this is out there is AMAZING.
