There is going to be a total lunar eclipse this month on Feb 20, 2008. If you will be in South America, parts of North America, Western Europe, Africa, and western Asia, then you are lucky enough to be able to see it. Check out this map to see if you’ll be able to view it. Click on the picture for an enlarged version.

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe and can be seen with the naked eye. It’s because a solar eclipse is when the moon is positioned between the earth and the sun (which blocks the sun from the point of the view of the earth), where as a lunar eclipse is when the earth is positioned between the moon and the sun, making the earth’s shadow fall against the moon (giving the illusion like the moon disappears). It should be really cool and I’m super excited for it. Please God let it be a clear sky that night…and warm enough for me to be out to watch it.
