Online Harassment Ignored By Laws

I had originally re-posted a post from resist racism, but then I realized after that the author(s) asked for their writings to not be republished without permission. This is a good lesson for me to make sure I do so in the future.
The post was about a story that has become quite popular lately which involves two neighbouring families with 13 year old daughters. The two daughters were friends at one point, but then broke off their relationship when certain things occurred (I’m not sure what exactly). So to get revenge the mother (Lori Drew) of one of Girl A created a fake online identity as Josh Evans with the help of others and befriended Girl B (Megan Meier) on her myspace account. Over the course of a few weeks Lori portrayed Josh Evans to like Megan, which resulted in Megan falling for Josh. Lori/ Josh then abruptly broke up with Megan by telling her that she treats her friends badly, and then sending out all the juicy details of Megan’s confessions to Josh to a number of Megan’s fellow students. Many of then harassed her on her myspace account calling her fat and a slut, and then Josh left his last comment on Megan’s myspace that stated “Everybody in O’Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you.” Megan, who had suffered from depression for several years of her life hung herself that night in her bedroom closet and later died the next day in the hospital.
