Chopsticks

There is something very satisfying about eating rice with chopsticks. I’m usually given a spoon or a fork whenever I go to a Chinese, Japanese or Korean restaurant. I don’t blame them. The first time I went to a Korean restaurant was before I knew how to use chopsticks and I struggled to eat my blackbean noodles with two spoons (those long-ass soup spoons you get at Korean restaurants, at that). The waitress politely asked if I wanted a fork, which I was grateful for. I was still very shy at that point and actually conversing with someone I didn’t know scared the crap out of me. Now that I’ve learned how to use chopsticks, I have more than any sane person needs. Although, my fiance’s family has an entire drawer full of them in their kitchen.

One of my roommates had never really seen chopsticks before in her life (surprise, surprise) and I showed her how to hold and use them. She couldn’t stop laughing. At the time I didn’t know if I should feel insulted or if I should just brush it off as another part of her childish insensitivity. She still doesn’t believe how useful they are. Her loss, I guess. Sometimes though, I wish I could use them to stab certain people in the eye…but I’m sure that breaks some rule of chopstick etiquette.
