God Is Like An Elephant
Author: Ams
A famous Indian parable that I was brought up with was the one of the five men and the elephant. Each man felt different parts of the elephant and then conversed between each other about what the elephant was like. The one who felt the trunk said the elephant was long and slender like a snake. The one who felt the leg said it was thick and sturdy like the trunk of a tree. The one who felt the tusks said the elephant was sharp and pointy like spears. The one who felt the elephant’s ears said it was thin and flapped like a fan. And finally the one who felt the tail said it was like a thin rope. There are different versions of the story, but this is the basic gist of it. The moral of the story is that you cannot judge anything based on one component of it.
